How to play
In the browser: open the USA game (1971–1991) or the Japan game (1980–2005), pick a career and live through 15 years quarter by quarter: save, invest in stocks or gold, buy a home, pay debts. You win when passive income covers your living costs for four quarters in a row (USA), or when your net worth covers ten years of living costs for four quarters in a row (Japan).
In ChatGPT: add the In Someone Else's Shoes app and ask, for example, “Start a game in Japan as a bank employee, put half my cash into stocks and play four quarters.” ChatGPT uses these tools:
list_professions,start_game— choose a career and start;get_status— money, holdings, prices and what the bank would lend (changes nothing);make_decision— buy or sell stocks or gold, buy or sell a home, refinance, repay a loan;next_turn— move one quarter forward;end_game— see the final result;delete_game— erase the game.
Common problems
- An action was refused. The reply names the reason: not enough cash, the bank refuses a mortgage (no job or payments too high), gold ownership not yet legal (USA before 1975), nothing to sell, or no refinancing offer. Check
get_statusand try a smaller amount or another quarter. - “request_id already used”. Each action needs a new request ID; a repeated ID returns the earlier result instead of acting twice. ChatGPT normally handles this; ask it to try again as a new action.
- “Session not found”. The game was deleted, or expired 30 days after its last change. Start a new game.
- “Game is finished”. The 15 years are over, you won, or you went bankrupt. Ask for the final result (
end_game) and start a new game. - Browser progress disappeared. Saves live in your browser's site data; clearing it, private browsing or another device starts fresh.
- Browser and chat games differ. They are separate games; progress does not carry over.
